The first Great Shearwater of the season was watched today at 18:35 local time. The wind blew from NNW, and there was a passage of c. 90 Cory's/hour, but very few Balearics. Other birds watched moving west were Manx Shearwater, "Commic" Tern, Whimbrel and Med Gull.
Observer: Antonio Sandoval One of them was a puppy. Regarding birds, most interesting was a Curlew, so you can imagine... Anyway, I had a couple of nice encounters during the morning walk: There was a feeding flock of more than 150 Gannets close to the headland: The weather was quite fine today, perfect for a swim at the clear waters of Porto de Bares: Observer and photographs: Antonio Sandoval Rey
Too foggy during the morning: The evening was clearer, and the count produced 108 Gannets/h, 1 Manxie, 17 Balearics eastwards, 7 Medgulls westwards, 25 Common Scotters eastwards, a curlew and 2 Sandwich Terns westwards an 1 Greta Skua.
Observer: Antonio Sandoval The weather is due to change, leaving behind the NE winds. These first hours have been quite foggy. Only a few gannets and Cory´s during the late evening count.
Observer: Antonio Sandoval Rey Not much to write about today: just a lot of Gannets riding the NE wind and 3 skuas durinf the morning count.
Observer: Antonio Sandoval Rey Two «commic» terns eastwards and a Curlew westwards were the main news for today. The 3-hs count also provided 2 Great Skuas, and a few Balearics and Cory´s, as well as 82 Gannets/h. As yesterday, the wind kept blowing from the East.
Observer: Antonio Sandoval Rey A few ad Black-Headed and Mediterranean Gulls westwards were the only interesting sights this evening, together with 1 Manx and 41 Gannets/hour.
A great Basking Shark kept feeding not far from the headland offering very nice sights. Observer: Antonio Sandoval Rey The wind kept blowing fron the South for the las hours, so it was quite a surprise to find groups of up to 25 Strom-Petrels feeding close to the headland. Several of them approached the coastline, gibing the chance to identify 3 Wilson's. During the afternoon, Storm-Petrels kept moving West in tiny numbers.
There was also a nice passage of Gannets all through the morning (117/h), as well as Cory's (60/h, but close to 200/h during the first hours after sun up). But not as many Balearics as yesterday. Other species watched were Great Skua (4), Arctic Skua (1 moving East and another feeding with gulls and Storm-Petrels), and Common Scoter (3 westwards and 5 eastwards). Observers: Antonio Sandoval Rey, Antonio Martínez Pernas During the 2,45 h morning count 2 Fin Whales were seen moving West, one of them quite close to the coastline. Regarding birds, there weas a westwards passage of 35 Gannets/h, 25 Cory's/h and 26 Balearics/h. Almost half the Balearics were already moulting their flght feathers. Other birds seen were Sandwich Terns and Med Gull.
