The NE wind keeps blowing so numbers are decreasing more and more each day.
In 4 hs during the early morning and the evening we counted: 42 Little Terns, 134 «commic» Terns, 46 Black Terns (more than yesterday) and 34 Sandwich Terns. Skua numbers were very low (1 Pom, 10 Arctic, 10 Bonxies, 1 Long-Tailed), and Shearwater numbers again very poor (35 Manx, 26 Cory’s, 7 Sooty, 1 Great, 3 Balearic). Observers: Pablo Gutierrez, Antonio Sandoval Today’s 4,45 hs count was better than expected. With the NE wind bringing clouds to the coastline, we still managed to obtain some nice numbers for some species. For example, 82 Little Terns, 324 «commic» Terns, 40 Black Terns and 124 Sandwich Terns. Almost all of them during the evening count. Also 4 Sabine’s Gulls and the first Little Gull of the season, a juvenile. Skua numbers were low (1 Pom, 20 Arctic, 15 Bonxies, 2 Long-Tailed), and Shearwater numbers very poor (56 Manx, 82 Cory’s, 58 Sooty, 1 Great, 1 Balearic). A group of 4 Grey Phalaropes passed close to the observatory flying East early in the morning.
Observer: Antonio Sandoval The change of the wind from N to NE brought a huge passage of terns all through the day: 728 Sandwich, 1,531 «commic», 230 Black and 84 Little Terns were very nice numbers for the 8,5 hs count. Some other good numbers were 135 Arctic Skuas (51 of them in the first 2 hours of the morning), 34 Bonxies, 2 LT Skuas, 1,138 Cory’s, 406 Sooties and 5 Sabine´s Gulls. The NE wind will keep on blowing for the next week, so daily numbers will decrease for a while.
On the top of the hill of Cañoles, 2 km from the headland, there was an Ortolan Bunting (a very scarce migrant here), as well as several Pied Flycatchers, Whinchats, a Weateater, a Hobby, 6 Common Buzzards and the local Ravens. Observers: Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Martinez Pernas, Antonio Sandoval The wind blew from the W in the early morning and from the N in the
afternoon and evening. The result was a good passage of Sooties for this time of the year: 479 birds in the 9,15 hs count. Other nice numbers were 1,362 Cory´s and 863 Manxies. Regarding Skuas, 91 Arctic, 25 Poms, 38 Bonxies and 4 Long-Tailed. Other birds on the move were «commic» Terns (281), Black Terns (64), Sandwich Terns (91)... We also watched a distant Storm Petrel. Observers: David Calleja, Enrique Carballal, Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Gutierrez, Pablo Gutierrez, Antonio Martinez Pernas, Antonio Sandoval With the North wind blowing all day, the numbers of several species were quite nice. These are the totals for today´s 10 hours count:
Fea’s / Madeira Petrel: 1 Fulmar: 1 Sabine´s Gull: 1 Grey Phalarope: 10 Great Shearwater: 40 Manx Shearwater: 759 Sooty Shearwater: 88 Cory’s Shearwater: 1,291 Balearic Shearwater: 5 Great Skua: 61 Pomarine Skua: 19 Arctic Skua: 95 Long-Tailed Skua: 9 «Commic» Tern: 370 Sandwich Tern: 181 Little Tern: 31 Black Tern: 67 Whimbrel: 82 Oystercatcher: 52 Mediterranean Gull: 1 Common Scoter: 42 Observers: Enrique Carballal, Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Gutierrez, Pablo Gutierrez, Guillermo Lasaro, Daniel Lopez Velasco, David Martinez Lago, Antonio Martinez Pernas, Pablo Pita, Cosme Damian Romay, Antonio Sandoval, Alfonso Valderas Almost no wind at first hour and a wet W wind during the evening. We had to stop counting due to the rain by the end of the day. The best numbers in 4,45 hs were 93 Sandwich Terns, 8 Poms, 13 Artic Skuas... There was not much passage, so we had a lot of time to talk about bird migration! Observers: Alex Colorado, Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Martinez Pernas, Diego Portillo, Jose Portillo, Antonio Sandoval, Alfonso Valderas. Nice fall of migrants and ringing session today: 11 Willow Warblers, 8 Sedge Warblers, 7 Reed
Warblers, 3 Whitethroats and 1 Iberian Chiffchaff were caught and ringed. In the area there were several Pied and Spotted Flycatchers, Whinchats, Wheateaters and a Red-Backed Shrike. At sea, with a very soft W wind, there was not much passage during the 4,45 hs count. Some of the species watched were 1 LT Skuas, 6 Arctic Skuas, 5 Poms and 10 Bonxies, as well as 77 Sandwich Terns, 75 Black Terns, 93 Common Scoters.. Very few Shearwaters and some waders were also on the move. Once again a local Peregrine captured a Black Tern. Observers: Alex Colorado, J.Ramón Bugallo, Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Martinez Pernas, Diego Portillo, Jose Portillo, Antonio Sandoval, Pablo Pita, Alfonso Valderas. Only 1 Bonxie today during the 4,5 hs count. No other skuas. And only a handfull of shearwaters. It was a bit boring, but there was a very close Fulmar an unseasonal juvenile Kittiwake and 61 Black Terns. One of the Black Terns was captured by the female Peregrine.
Today also appeared the first Wheatears of the season (4 birds), coinciding with several migrant Whinchats and Pied Flycatchers. At Esteiro estuary, 3 km from the headland, a Czeck juvenile Black Stork was photographed early in the morning by Antonio Martinez Pernas. Observers: Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Martinez Pernas, Antonio Sandoval, Alfonso Valderas. The strong NW winds coming from Greenland into the Bay of Biscay are surely the cause of the high numbers of Grey Phalaropes counted this evening. The morning was nice, with almost no wind and a strong movement of Cory’s, as well as several Bonxies and Arctic Skuas. During the afternoon the wind started to blow from NNE, and the result was an unforgettable one. These are the total numbers obtained during the 7,30 hs count: Observers: Ricardo Hevia, Antonio Martínez Pernas, Maarten Plaateuw, Antonio Sandoval, Alfonso Valderas |
